Kris Freeman, Kikkan Randall Win Fairbanks SuperTour Sprint

Oct 4, 2024

In a race that saw the two US Ski Team favorites, Andrew Newell and Torin Koos go out in the Quarterfinals, Kris Freeman picked up his second victory in two days.

Freeman's time in the qualifying round was only 8th, with Koos cranking out the fastest lap in 3:03.52. Chris Cook of Sun Valley bested Newell and put up the second fastest qualifying time. After Koos and Newell were surprisingly eliminated in the quarterfinals, it came down to Canadian Drew Goldsack, Anchorage skier Lars Flora, and Brayton Osgood from the Maine Winter Sports Center joining Freeman in the A Final. Freeman kept ahead of the tough competition by 1.3 seconds at the finish, with Flora beating Goldsack to the line by .7 seconds. Osgood took fourth, 4.4 seconds back.

On the women's side Kikkan Randall won the final by a whopping 3.7 seconds ahead of last year's overall SuperTour winner Karin Camenisch. Brooke Hovey (formerly Brook Baughman) who had the fastest qualifying time and Dartmouth College skier Alison Crocker were the other two women to make it all the way to the final, finishing 5.2 and 14.3 seconds behind Randall. Yesterday's winner Beckie Scott, who is usually a podium threat in any World Cup sprint, did not start in her quarterfinal after coming in 6 seconds adrift of Hovey's pace in the qualification round.
